1. Nightjohn
Basically to summarize night john.... Sarny finds a penny and has to hide it because the slaves aren't allowed to have money. The slaves are also not allowed to learn anything educational. Nightjohn is brought by Waller, he is in bad condition. He asks the people for tobacco, Sarny gives him tobacco in exchange for reading and writing lessons. He taught Sarny a few letters, and a few numbers. Mammy catches Sarny writing in the dirt, she smacks her in the head, and tells her she is not allowed to do it anymore. She tells nightjohn not to teach her, or at least not get caught teaching her. Alice is made into a breeder, and is whipped horribly. The next day Alice runs away, she does not make it far, and hides under some Brussels. The dogs get to here and chew her up good, but she does not die. Mammy sews her up to her best abilities. Nightjohn tells Sarny and Mammy how he ran escaped from slavery and made it to the North and was free, but he came back to slavery so he could teach other slaves how to read and write.

2. Mascot
To summarize Mascot....
Malcolm's older brother Philbert is a great boxer. Malcom wanted to be a great boxer just like Philbert, so he gets a fight. His whole family watches and he gets destroyed by Bill Peterson. He is humiliated. He trains for a long time and gets a rematch with Bill, and losses just as badly. Malcolm doesn't box again. Malcolm is expelled from his school, and he is sent to boarding school. He works hard at the boarding school, and all the people there like him very much. Malcolm really likes it at the school. He eventually leaves the school and attends Mason Junior High School. He was popular at his school, and he liked the teachers and students there. In 7th grade, he was elected class president, his family and all his friends were extremely proud of him, and he was very proud of himself. His grades were among the highest in his class. His sister Ella comes home, and she takes Malcolm and all of the "littles" to Kalamazoo to see their mother. Their mother was very surprised to see them all, but she was also very happy. Malcolm spends the summer of 1940 in boston with Ella. He saw things he had never seen before in Boston, like black and white couples, and churches for black people. Back at home in school Malcolm told R. Ostrowski that he wanted to be a lawyer, and the teacher told him to be realistic, and he couldnt be a lawyer because he was black.

3. The Great Debaters
To compare and contrast great debaters and nightjohn and mascot....
Well first of all nightjohn comes long before mascot and great debaters. But great debaters and mascot are right around the same time, its when black people had, had their freedom for a long time, but were still descriminated against. But in great debaters they are discriminated against more than they are in mascot, because they are in the south. For example in mascot black people weren't treated equal, but they weren't discriminated as badly as in great debaters. Like in great debaters, you see a black person who was burned and hung. And also the main character is sent to jail, even though he didn't do anything wrong. And then in Nightjohn the African American people did not even have freedom yet. And it didnt exactly say a time period, but it appeared to be before the civil war, so black people would not gain freedom for a long time. Which makes it take place much before mascot and great debaters. To compare great debaters and mascot, the biggest comparison is that Malcolm wanted to be a lawyer, and the main girl character in great debaters ended up becoming a lawyer. To contrast great debaters and mascot with nightjohn further... In nightjohn none of the black people even knew how to read, but in mascot and great debaters, they could read,write, and attended school and college, and learned so much more.
